Google Introduces YouTube live video stream in Google Street View!

01.04.10 00:11 | Magne Uppman

Earlier today, we discovered something brand new in Google Street View. When we searched for an address, a YouTube video with a live video stream from the street we were looking for appeared to the right in the Street View picture. Google have now confirmed that this is something they are currently beta testing in Norway for potential international release.

We have not been able to find similar video streams on other addresses on repeated queries, but the screenshot below shows what we found earlier today:

We know that Google is working hard on merging YouTube and Google as a part of strengthening their products for advertisers. We therefore asked Google if this is something they are working on:

- I can confirm that this is one of the products we are beta testing in the process of merging YouTube and Google products for advertisers, says Jan Grønbech, Country Manager in Google Norway.

- If the beta testing in Norway is successful, we will introduce live YouTube video streams in Google Street View on many addresses internationally.

Google Street View got a lot of attention from the users and the press when the service was introduced in selected Norwegian cities. With this new potential release, we are excited to see the new wave of reactions.

Qualité Search Marketing will be back with more information when available.

Google lanserer YouTube live videostream i Google Street View!

It seems that not everyone got the april fools joke...

I think the joke mostly applies to people in Europe, or within the EU, as there has been some controversy around the potential violation of a person’s right to privacy around the image quality and retention of the images captured by Google Street View. Though I know this has also been the case in the US. Google’s response was to create an algorithm that automatically blurred out all faces and car registration plates. Therefore, a service like live video streams in Google Street View would most likely start another heated discussion as it would probably be harder to blur faces and registration plates, even though the complaint regarding the retention of the video wouldn’t be a problem.

But yeah, it's great to see SEL take the bait. Even Danny Sullivan tweeted it, explicitly saying it was no April-fools. Which was then followed by another tweet saying that he wasn’t gonna waste any time reading all the April-fool jokes that day :)

Video + Maps? Isn't this a little bit what is showcased on http://www.VideoStreetView.com

Yeah, it's similar, although the April's fool was about live video, as opposed to recorded video (as in your link).
